En s’éloignant des deux premières installations, ce troisième opus a donné un nouveau départ à la saga qui depuis ne fait qu’y quitte cette fois la Californie direction Tokyo où le jeune Sean Boswell est obligé de se rendre en raison de ses problèmes avec la police de la côte Ouest. Se sentant exclu, il rencontre Twinkie qui lui fait découvrir le drifting, un sport clandestin incluant vitesse et élégance. Mais la rencontre avec DK, caïd local, va vite faire tourner le jeu en dangereuse nouveau casting, un nouveau réalisateur et une nouvelle ambiance encore plus portée sur les acrobaties automobiles, voilà l’élan nouveau qu’apporte ce troisième opus atypique.
